Research indicates that meditation may be most useful as a positive source of renewal and relaxation. A way to “chill” without causing health problems or harm.
WHAT IS RISK REDUCTION?
Mediation is an attention focusing, inner directed process. It aids in relaxation while increasing awareness. It connects us with our own inner source of wisdom and self healing capacity.
WHAT WILL I DO?
You will sit, close your eyes, and concentrate inwardly. Some sessions may include guided imagery and some may focus on inner reflection. The idea is to passively examine, without judging or resisting what you might think, feel, or visualize. This will be followed by discussion of anything that comes into your awareness.
WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE MIGHT OCCUR WITH ALTERED CONSCIOUSNESS?
It is difficult to predict what may actually happen. Your mind generates whatever you may need for your own growth or healing. In general, experiences are either creative or therapeutic.
WHAT DOES THE THERAPIST DO?
The therapist will be present at all times, help you to enter the meditative process, and stay with it until it ends. Afterwards, they will debrief the experience and make sure that you are aware, alert, and ready to leave the office.
WHAT SHOULD I DO BETWEEN SESSIONS?
You may want to practice your relaxation and basic meditation skills to facilitate the therapeutic process.
About Motivational Enhancement Therapy
Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a counseling approach that focuses on improving an individual’s motivation to change. This approach aims to help individuals overcome their ambivalence or resistance to changing behaviors that may be self-destructive and have a negative impact on health, family life, or social functioning. MET focuses on the treatment of alcohol and other substance addictions.
After an initial assessment, MET is comprised of four targeted treatment sessions which are personalized to the need of the individual. These sessions can often help an individual to view behaviors more objectively and become empowered to begin the process of change for staying sober.
